The Organization

The Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS) is an independent, honorific, service-oriented organization that provides evidence-informed advice to the government and nation on matters of science, technology, innovation, and development.

The Positions

UNAS seeks a Senior Research Officer (SRO) and a Research Officer (RO). The officers will work closely with Fellows of the Academy (eminent members of the scientific community selected for their meritorious conduct and scientific excellence to serve pro bono) on a wide range of issues relevant to Uganda’s development.

As a Senior Research Officer with UNAS, you will extensively conduct systematic research and analyze data, prepare background evidence documents, participate in writing funding proposals, and work and engage with a wide range of stakeholders to shape consensus studies and convening activities. You will be challenged to learn new approaches to thinking and working in a dynamic and cross-cultural organization that responds to systemic societal needs.

As a Research Officer with UNAS, you will support the Senior Research Officer to conducting extensive secondary research, and work with a wide range of stakeholders to shape consensus studies and convening activities.

Qualifications and Professional Competencies Senior Research Officer

  1. A first and second degree in any field, with a preference for the health and biological sciences.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work independently and supervise direct reports.
  3. Experience communicating with diverse internal and external audiences.
  4. A track record of completing projects within stipulated timeframes and budgets.
  5. Experience in designing and fundraising for multi-year development programs.
  6. Proficiency in mixed research methods and technical writing.

Research Officer

1. A first and second degree in any field(s), with a preference for the health and biological sciences.

  1. Proficiency in transdisciplinary research.
  2. Experience in designing and fundraising for multi-year development programs.

4. Proficiency in research methods (qualitative and quantitative), grant management, and scholarly writing

  1. Experience in monitoring and evaluation is an added advantage.
  2. Possess soft skills and cultural sensitivity.

Both the SRO and RO should additionally possess the following

  1. A minimum of three years of post-qualification work experience in a fast-paced organization.
  2. Excellent IT Skills (MS Office Suite, Internet, Zoom, Skype).
  3. Demonstrated English communication skills (written and oral), including donor stewardship, preparing program/ evaluation reports, and public speaking.
  4. Ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, and work as a member of a dynamic team.
  5. Demonstrated strong analytical capability and problem-solving abilities.
  6. Ability to multi-task and work under pressure to meet deadlines
  7. Possess soft skills and cultural sensitivity.
