Fellows and Membership Committee

The Fellows and Members Committee is a UNAS Standing Committee appointed by the President of Uganda National Academy of Sciences in accordance with Article 7 (4) of the UNAS Constitution 2011 As Amended 2013 2014 to oversee the nomination process, receive nominations, short-list and the prepare a list of candidates with their dossiers, hand over to the ad hoc Fellows Advisory Committee appointed by the President to finalise the process.

The Fellows and Membership Committee was constituted and charged with specific tasks in line with the UNAS Constitution Article 7, to assist the UNAS Council to oversee the nomination process, receive nominations, short-list and prepare a list of candidates with their dossiers, hand over to the ad hoc Fellows Advisory Committee appointed by the President to finalise the process.

The committee is mandated to oversee the nomination process, receive nominations, short-list and prepare a list of candidates with their dossiers, hand over to the ad hoc Fellows Advisory Committee appointed by the President to finalise the process.

All information obtained by the President, the members of the Fellows and Membership Committee, the Members of the Council or the Secretariat staff of the Academy on the persons considered for election, shall be treated as confidential to protect their privacy. The committee is required to keep a record of the minutes of the committee’s meeting(s) / deliberations and prepare a report detailing the committee’s assessment of each nominee. The Chair to the Fellows and Membership Committee shall present the committee’s report to the President and request him to appoint an Ad hoc Fellows Advisory Committee 2019 under Article 7.

The committee is also required to develop and Implement guidelines for identification of potential Fellows, develop and maintain the database of Fellows and any other useful information to facilitate continuity of operation, assist the Academy in developing guidelines and procedures for Fellows to contribute to the Academy activities including inaugural and public lectures and engage Fellows in the activities of the Academy.

Risk and Ethics Committee

The UNAS Standing Committee on Risk and Ethics is an advisory committee comprising UNAS Fellows that advises the UNAS Council on matters pertaining to its risk management policy as well as policies on ethical conduct. Given UNAS’ non-political and non-partisan position in advising on matters of science, the Committee will be tasked with adherence to UNAS’ stated values enshrined in public law, company law through the UNAS Constitution, or through internal policies. The Risk and Ethics Committee provides guidance to ensure that UNAS maintains that position both in theory and in practice. In addition, the Committee provides guidance to the UNAS Council on any risks to the ability of UNAS to maintain that standing and its relationship to the public trust.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee

Emerging Issues in Science and Policy Committee

The Standing Committee on Emerging Issues in Science and Policy is an advisory committee consisting of UNAS Fellows whose function is to help the Academy develop foresight on issues relevant to the scientific endeavor and public policy. In addition, it advises the UNAS Council on the incorporation of digital tools to improve the functionality and efficiency of the UNAS Secretariat. This Committee supports the overarching goal of the Academy to be both rooted in addressing present problems and anticipating the future.

Strategic Plan Implementation Committee

The Committee on Strategic Plan Implementation is an oversight committee for UNAS’ Strategic Plan 2018-2023. Its role is to provide quarterly reports to the UNAS Council on progress in the implementation of the UNAS Strategic Plan 2018-2023 and to provide a mechanism for consolidation of internal information. It also advises the UNAS Council on means of improving outcomes for efficiency of the Academy operations.

The Finance and Administration Committee

The Finance and Administration Committee is a UNAS Standing committee mandated among others by Council to provide oversight over the assets and resources, including personnel of the Academy in accordance with high professional standards and practices. The Committee is composed of 5 (Five) members who are all Fellows of the Academy. The committee is however allowed to co-opt from amongst the Academy’s Fellowship and outside the Academy should an expert need arise.

The Publications and Conferences Committee

The Publications and Conferences Committee is a UNAS Standing Committee mandated among others to recommend to Council policies and procedures for conferences and publications. It also has a major role in organizing the Academy’s premier event, “The Annual Scientific Conference”. It is comprised of (6) six members. The Committee is however allowed to co-opt from amongst the Academy’s Fellowship and outside the Academy should an expert need arise.

The committee on SDPP is a newly established standing committee of UNAS which brings together two former Standing Committees, one on Publicity, and one on Partnerships, whilst incorporating the new aspect of Science Diplomacy.
