Uganda National Young Academy

Introduction

Brief background of the UNYA

The Uganda National Young Academy (UNYA) was launched on September 29, 2015, with the aim of raising the voice of early career researchers within the public sphere. The launch was carried out by the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS), and in attendance were representatives of Government from the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Sports, Fellows and Members of Uganda National Academy of Sciences, Young Scientists, Researchers and Medical practitioners. Mrs. Elizabeth K.M. Gabona, Director, for Higher, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (HTVET) represented the Minister of State for Higher Education, Science and Technology as the guest of honour.

The UNYA is part of the wider network of National Young Academies worldwide, and so the launch was also attended by a member of The Global Young Academy, Dr. Fridah Erastus Kanana from Kenyatta University

Aims and Objectives:

  • The UNYA was established in order to mobilise scientists in the early stages of their research career so as to raise the voice of Young Scientists in Uganda in providing scientific advice within policy development.
  • To develop statements on science issues of national and global importance.
  • To promote science as a career of choice.
  • Finally to empower young researchers to lead international, interdisciplinary, and intergenerational dialogue with the goal of making global decision making evidence-based and inclusive.
